Sunderland was made a city in 1992 and is situated between Newcastle and Durham. It has the fabulous National Glass Centre and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens; as well as a flourishing nightlife! It has a beautiful coast with lots of beaches where you can look out at the sea in tea rooms, restaurants and bars! Sunderland is noted for its car making industry after Nissan began making cars there in 1986. The main industry for which Sunderland was known above all others is of course shipbuilding and has long claimed to be the biggest shipbuilding town in the world. The first record of shipbuilding here was in 1346.
As well as all the above making Sunderland a great place in the North East, Sunderland is also vastly famous for its Football Club! With lots of proud and loyal fans following the club through its highs and lows. Sunderland AFC has done a lot for Charity and started the Foundation of Light charity in 2001 and is the biggest football charity in the UK. Many great achievements have came from the Foundation of light and one being able to open a free school next to the Stadium of Light. The Sunderland Centre for Opportunity offers opportunities for vulnerable children who struggle in mainstream education.
